Our Great Escape We stayed at Rosendale Inn because of the fabulous reviews about the Inn we found on Tripadvisor.com, the promise of tranquility and a starry night sky (we live in New York)--and we wanted to experience an authentic 19th Century plantation house (we are avid history buffs). The Inn exceeded our expectations. There was no traffic noise (you could even hear the flow of the river from our window), we hiked the 20 acres at the base of the mountain on which Rosendale is located, and discovered a “mansion” rich in history beyond our imagination. Paul, our host, an accomplished book author (we bought one of his books) and skilled conversationalist, shared tons of old photos of Rosendale history--and even a 1922 Harding invitation to a White House. Rosendale's “Museum room” is a must see. To top it off, our restored suite (two large rooms) and a king bed was pristine, light, and very comfortable. The gourmet breakfast(creatively presented fruits, Creole scrambled eggs, hash browns, and country sausage)was fantastic, and we made new friends at the breakfast table. We will definitely come back next year for our Great Escape II. Matthew and Jennifer T, May 2012

Circa 1790. Reflecting a genteel life and the southern traditions of hospitality, this well-preserved and authentically restored Victorian manor house mansion has grand verandas with two-story antebellum columns in the Shenandoah Valley. Gracing the base of the Massanutten Mountains between New Market and Harrisonburg, Virginia, half of the 20 pastoral acres are landscaped and include a river, a brook, a wooded preserve and a bird and deer sanctuary. Riding pastures and a picnic area are by the limestone spring house. Spacious guest suites feature antique furnishings. Many have fireplaces and one boasts a clawfoot tub. The bath lounge includes a four-person sauna. Enjoy a hearty healthy breakfast in the dining room which was the original log house perched on a hill overlooking Smith's Creek. The second-floor veranda offers spectacular views and cool breezes. Popular Endless Caverns is a seven-minute walk from the inn.
